Bringing a 1905 New Plymouth villa back to life
This captivating project showcases the meticulous restoration and thoughtful renovation of a grand old villa on Gover Street, New Plymouth. Originally built in 1905, the home slumbered for decades before embarking on a five-year transformation by passionate owner-builders.
Honouring the Past, Embracing the Future
The project's guiding principle was to celebrate the villa's heritage while creating a modern, open-plan living space. The classic features like timber sash windows, a bullnose veranda, and wood turnings were meticulously restored.
A Heart for Open-Plan Living
At the rear of the house, a dramatic change unfolds. Here, the vision for a light-filled, open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area comes to life. Large double-glazed aluminium windows and doors by Omega Windows + Doors bathe the space in natural light and blur the lines between indoors and outdoors, creating a seamless connection to the expansive deck, lawn, and gardens.
A Symphony of Details
The homeowners' commitment to detail shines throughout the project. Notably, the open-plan living area showcases the skilful integration of new and existing elements. When removing walls to create the open space, careful planning ensured a seamless transition between the original 90mm Matai floorboards and the wider 135mm boards found throughout the rest of the house.
A Labour of Love
Over five years, the project encompassed a complete reclad, reroofing, re-piling, and the creation of a new car park area. The homeowners' dedication to the project reflects the Kiwi spirit of self-reliance and pride in crafting a beautiful and functional home.
